Activities for Busy Thumbs

During lockdown (2020) I faced the prospect of life in the house with my 2-year-old. Not being able to get out to our usual classes, parks, museums, farms etc. seemed very daunting and I knew that I needed a plan and structure for our days and weeks. This was for me as much as for Robbie. Early on I decided that having a theme for each week was the easiest way for me to structure my time and find inspiration for fun and engaging activities. Naturally, my teacher’s brain went into overdrive and I ran with it.

I have decided to share our themes, plans and activities because I hope they can inspire others or help them when they are feeling at a loss of how to keep their kids entertained. I know that school holidays can be long and sometimes we are all too tired to be creative so hopefully, this can help.

A lot of these activities and themes could be adapted for older children and linked in with both the Early Years Curriculum and Curriculum for Excellence to be used as topics in nurseries and primary school. If you would like any more information about this please get in contact.

All the activities we have done are straightforward and only required resources that you can find in the house or local shop. I have created a mind map for each topic which includes extra ideas and links within the activity descriptions to resources, recipes etc.

I have also included a link to my Pinterest board, as I got so many great ideas from here, and a map of “Things to do” in and around the Central Belt that I found on a mummy group Facebook page.
